How to Create a Summer Schedule Your Teen Will Love: A Mom’s Guide to Balance and Fun

Navigating the teenage years can be a challenge, especially when it comes to setting schedules. The key to success is creating a collaborative environment where both you and your teenager feel heard and respected. Here’s how to make it happen.

Start by asking your teenager, “Do you have any plans this summer?” If they respond with “no” or “I don’t know,” use this as an opportunity to introduce the idea of a summer schedule. You could say, “Would you like to have a summer schedule that’s fun, productive, and exciting?” This approach shows that you care about their happiness and want to ensure they have a fulfilling summer.

Are you excited about 2021 Thanksgiving Day as much as I do? It will be our second time to celebrate Thanksgiving Day in Canada. Last year’s celebration was a memorable one as our family just moved to Vancouver in October. Hubby took the time to bake our very first turkey to celebrate Thanksgiving Day at home. We didn’t know anyone yet at that time, and we celebrated with only the three of us. Being together with the family is more than enough blessing. 

In Singapore, the celebration is very similar to Mid-Autumn Festival. It is one of the most important holidays among the Chinese, where family and friends gather, and there is a colourful display of lanterns that symbolize the lighting of the path forward. One thing which is memorable for me was the tasting of a variety of flavours of delicious mooncakes. 

This year’s Thanksgiving Day, we want a simple yet memorable celebration. After all, it’s about being grateful no matter the circumstances we all face. Blessings abound and multiply when we celebrate with gratitude in our hearts.

How to make your 2021 Thanksgiving Day more meaningful and more fun?

What would make this Thanksgiving more meaningful is to reflect on things around us. It will be more fun if there are interesting topics in a conversation with your family members and friends while enjoying a great feast. 

I thought of an activity that’s not exactly unique but hopefully would make each family member and friend happy.

Here are the activities you can do to make your Thanksgiving day more meaningful and more fun:

1. Cheery Q

a. Prepare thought-provoking questions (see the sample questions below) on a colourful piece of paper

b. roll the paper 

c. put the rolled paper into a glass bowl or cute box

d. let each of the family members and friends pick one rolled paper and answer the question.

Whether you are preparing Thanksgiving for everybody or attending a friend’s Thanksgiving dinner, include a simple letter of thanks or gratitude while handing over the food. 8 Best After-School Routines for 10 Years old (Tweens) to be Happier & More Connected

Have you ever thought of how you can build a better after-school routine for your tween or kids such that they don’t end up just playing computer games or watching YouTube funny videos? It can be challenging for parents and tweens to find other ways to enjoy their time productively when they have no homework from school.

Here I share some of the after-school routines you can follow for your kids or tweens so they can be happier and at the same time feels more connected with themselves and the rest of the family members. These routines will help build a sense of responsibility, life skills, and a good attitude as they grow older.

1.         Exercise or Play Together at the Park

Take the time to bring your tween or your kid to the playground or the park during non-PE days. Kids do play at school, but due to certain Covid restrictions, they don’t have much time to play with friends as they want to. Take the afterschool opportunity to be with your tween, playing whatever games they want. My tween likes to play volleyball at the park. At times we also play basketball. You will know your tween well by being with them and doing things together that make them happy.

2.         Take a Good Bath

Taking a bath is such a boring routine for some kids. You can make it more interesting by letting them soak in a bubble bath for a few minutes longer than usual or prepare a warm bath for them with their favourite scent. You can have them prepare it or prepare together; whichever way is enjoyable. Having a variety of soap scents is something new and will be more fun and enjoyable for them. It will also help them relax their muscles and get into a positive mood for the rest of the night.

3.         Get in the Habit of Writing Together in the Journal

Who says that only adults can do journaling? Back in our old days, we probably call journaling like writing in the diary. Although, it was then merely a colourful book where you could write down the memorable and fun things that happened during the day. Nowadays, there are a lot of journals available for tweens or kids. One of the things we do together is writing in the “mother and daughter” journal. I share a little more about other ways to meaningfully connect with your tween daughter and its benefits here. My tween also has another solo journal that has thought-provoking prompts in them. Writing a journal promotes self-awareness, gratitude, and personal growth.

4.         Teach your Tween to Clean Up Her Lunch Box and Snack Box

Often, it is always the mother who does the cleaning and washing of the lunch box. Never feel guilty about teaching your kid or tween at a young age to care for her stuff. Teaching them how to soap and wash their lunch box is a great way to be more responsible. Let it be part of her house chore is a perfect example that families ought to help each other willingly.

5.         Have your Child Participate in Virtual Leadership and Training Sessions

Many non-profit organizations are more than willing to help ease the burden of being locked down at home. As such, they offer several virtual training and leadership sessions with different age groups. The sessions are not daily and hold once or twice a week. Google search non-profit organizations in your vicinity that offer those type of activities that helps build child’s resiliency, emotional intelligence, and life skills. One of the organizations that offer similar activities for varying age groups is the Low Entropy Foundation.

6.         Help Your Child Develop the Habit of Reading a Book 

Getting your child grow the habit of reading will improve her vocabulary and reading comprehension that will ultimately improve her creativity and critical thinking skills. Apart from playing online games like Minecraft Education, you can provide inspiring and educational storybooks, non-fiction, and fiction books that your tween finds appealing. Sometimes, nudging them to read if they don’t like, could be challenging, but once you make it available for them and see the book fascinating, they would pick it up and start reading. There are many available free books you can borrow for your child in the community library. If you are living in the tri-cities of Lower Mainland, Vancouver, you can check out the free books from the little library. For the more techie type and if you want to monitor your child’s progress, there are several great reading apps which your child can use anytime and anywhere.

7.         Let your Child/Tween Prepare Her Clothes & Other Stuff for School

Your child feels happy when they can wear clothes they like, and they feel empowered if you let them decide what to wear for school. Let them prepare their clothes (or uniform), socks, and whatever school stuff to bring before going to bed so that they will not rush the next day. Instill in them the habit of preparing early for times like school days. They will learn the attitude of always preparing early and ready to seize the day as they grow up.

8.         Pray together

Praying together shows a great perspective to your tween. At a young age, they may not have a strong sense of faith yet. Engaging them every day in praying together and seeking God even when they don’t completely understand is a worthwhile pursuit. Praying together can be a step in teaching them to acknowledge God and honour Him as they grow older. Never skip this part of your child or tween’s routine.

Having a good afterschool routine for kids is a lifesaver both for the kids and the parents. Afterschool routine makes your kids happier and connected.  As a summary, these are the eight afterschool routines you can follow:

Canada Back to School Tips for Busy Moms

Summer is almost over. I have mixed emotions – happy and relieved because I will finally have more focus time doing my work without any interruption from my tween; sad because I will miss her for sure.

It was about the same period last year where I was rushing a few final school projects. And I never really thought deeply about my daughter’s school opening this September harder than I am right now. It felt different then because she was schooling online as Toronto was on lockdown. I guess this is normal for me to feel this way because we are new immigrants.

Thoughts and feelings can sometimes be quite unsettling.
I hope I will not feel dramatic when at home alone. And I know the only way to avoid that is to keep my focus on my work and get super productive of my time. Yup, I hate to use the common word busy. Now, people are great at it. I want to use more positive words, like being more creative, resourceful, happier, more conscientious, more spiritual in my ways and approach, more loving, more caring, more focused, more love!

As the school opening is coming soon, I want to be more prepared and upbeat. Going to school as a new immigrant can be a little daunting and so I want to equip myself with back to school tips before I get too overwhelmed. I want to prepare myself and my tween daughter for what is coming as she turns grade 5. As a mom, we always want the best in everything, especially in looking after our kids. No matter how much work we do at home or in the office, sometimes we question ourselves, am I doing the best for my kid and the whole family? Work is consuming much of our time, and house chores seem to be endless that at times, we trade those sweet quality times with family because we feel the time is always not enough.

And so today, I want to recognize that things can get messy even though I have prepared in advance. For sure, I would still get frustrated at times as I begin to adjust to the new school routine of my tween. I also want to acknowledge that I can win each day with the right attitude and mindset.

Here I want to share the best back to school tips for busy moms like me. Actually, it’s a simple practical guide that’ll hopefully help you easily manage the routine changes in your family as a new immigrant and as your kids start schooling this September in Canada.

Prepare and prepare well!

Back to school tips for busy moms:

  1. For this week which is the last week before the school opening of your kids, you should already have meal plans for breakfast, lunch, and dinner ready.
  2. You should already have the school supplies, clothes (or uniform) ready.
  3. You should already have a plan who will be in charge of sending the kids to school and who will fetch them. Otherwise, a school bus should be pre-booked for them.
  4. Arrange school stuff and remove the unnecessary toys and destruction in the room so your kids can focus on their lessons. Of course, applicable only if your kids are going for online classes, make their home classroom conducive.
  5. Talk to your kid(s) and set clear expectations for them during school days and weekends. Assign house chores for your kids to follow.
  6. Have your kid’s body clock adjust to school wake-up time so that next week will be a smooth sailing first week of school.
  7. Remember every day is a work in progress. No matter how pro you are at homemaking and caring for your family, acknowledge that you are imperfectly human. Always remember to be positive in your outlook and approach every day. It’s not only you who is adjusting to the school routine, but all family member is also.
  8. Use your school calendar and planner to engage with your daily goals both at work and at home. It will inspire you to approach each day with happy thoughts understanding you are true to your goals, values, and principles.
  9. Pray. Remember to pray each morning and at night before going to bed. Strengthening your spirituality is like feeding your soul. It will help you to welcome each day with positivity.

3 Ways to Meaningfully Connect with your Tween Daughter

Time flies. I wanted to make the most of my time bonding with my daughter. I feel it’s essential to create a meaningful relationship with her early on before she becomes a full-grown teenager. I do not want to find any reason or take the busyness of life to get in the way of knowing my daughter inside and out. Knowing what motivates and inspires her and be able to support her is the most fulfilling part of becoming a mom.

Just like any other relationship building, things here are intentional and require a little bit of planning and effort. It comes naturally though as you do it together consistently.

Here are a few things you can start doing to form a good bonding relationship with your daughter:

1. Support And Encourage Her Interests

I notice my daughter feels happier and confident to share more when I show interest in what she’s doing. And so, I try to support and encourage her this way. 

Both my daughter and I like arts and crafts. Ever since she was a little younger, we do arts and crafts together. We would paint the wine bottles and make them decorative art pieces. We would colour and draw together. We would buy lots of glue and food colouring and make different types of slime. 

Now that she’s a tween, her interests change a little bit. She likes to play online games like Minecraft, create animation, and projects in Scratch and Canva. Also, one thing we love doing together is painting. 

You don’t have to do things together every single day unless you have some flexibility around your schedule. You can spend at least an hour or two doing things together such as arts or sports or just plain watching movies. The key here is to do it consistently every week and not do it only when it feels convenient to you.

2. Take the Time to Talk and Listen to Her Thoughts & Feelings

Remember those days when she was just a toddler, she would request for you to read stories for her over and over again? Well, now that she is a tween, she still wants those moments with you but in a way that’s quite mature. 

For us, we do this right after praying together as a family. I would linger a little bit more to talk to my daughter and ask a few things like, “How did you find your day today? What made you say those things earlier? Or I would ask her, “Are you happy today?”. 

Listening builds trust. I am learning each day as well. But one thing I know is that when I talk to my daughter in that quiet moment, the more I understand her feelings and thoughts. I believe tweens have lingering questions they may be shy to ask or talk about (such as changes in their body, opinions, and feelings). As tween moms, we can lead them positively and open up the conversation if we feel it’s the right time to do so. 

3. Journal together and Keep good Memories

Another good bonding with my daughter I find fulfilling and fun is journaling together. On her birthday, I gifted her a book, “Just Us Girls”. In the book, there are questions and prompts for the mom and for the daughter to answer, share thoughts, and feelings. So far, this is the little secret we keep together. My husband is not allowed to peek into this book, and my daughter finds it comforting to know.

We agreed we would journal together every Saturday, Monday, and Wednesday. Those are the days where she could ask me a few things about what I wrote and vice versa. The journal prompts provide some reflections of how she sees life and situations and the same goes for me as her mom. 

After writing in the journal, we look at each other’s answers and talk about them. It has been so far one of our favourite little bonding together as mother and daughter.

“Tell me about a time when you put in extra effort and your hard work paid off. How did you feel?”.

“When you do this, it reminds me of myself because…”

Conclusion

Building a strong connection with your tween daughter is much like any other relationship-building. It requires time, commitment, and consistency. It requires meaningful conversation and a deeper understanding of each other and you can build this by:

  • Supporting and encouraging her interests
  • Taking the time to talk and listen to her thoughts and feelings
  • Journaling together and keeping good memories

Summer Schedule for 10 years old

I created a schedule for my daughter to follow for the whole duration of her summer break (for everybody’s peace of mind 🙂 Her summer school break is from the end of June to the end of August. I realized I have to build a good routine for her to be productive and happy. Also, this will prevent her from just playing computer games and watching TV all day.

Below is her weekday schedule. If you have a 10-year old kid, feel free to follow the routine here or tweak some to your liking. Whatever suits best for your child and your work schedule.

In addition to the summer schedule, I also included the resource links of free worksheets that I am using for my child. The site is a super savior to me as it provides free exercises in various subjects such as Reading Comprehension, Math, Grammar, Vocabulary, & Science. And mommies, it is available for grade 1 to grade 5. You can check the free website resources link here I highly recommend it.

If you don’t have a printer at home, I included simple steps for you to delete the last page (which is the answer sheet) so that you can only show the pdf copy with questions. As for my daughter, she writes her answers in a separate notebook.  And I mark them at night or after she has finished answering them.

Steps to delete the last page (which is the answer sheet) in the pdf file:

1. Open the pdf file by right clicking the mouse and selecting the ‘print preview’

2. Click ‘edit’ in the command bar and select ‘delete’

3. Save the new file with a new file name.

For parents looking for a dedicated tutor, there’s also available multilingual tutor service app like Tuex that offers flexible scheduling options. 

For French lessons, I let my daughter watch Youtube videos and tutorials. Since she learned basic French when she was in grade 2, she can still easily picks up the words and phrases. As for her summer camp, I enrolled her in arts class to learn about weaving tapestry and embroidery. It’s a little different from the normal art class like painting and drawing and I am glad she likes it a lot.

Here’s the Youtube link to French lessons. I also bought a mini French book at Amazon. There are tons of books and exercises you can buy at Amazon. But I am a fan of freebies if they are available. 🙂

Later on (perhaps in August), I will get her a tutor so she can practice real conversation in French. I think it’s also an appropriate way to prepare her for French immersion class once we got a placement at her school.

Conclusion

Summer break should be fun and productive for your kids, and it should not cause havoc or anxiety in every family member. So it is important to create a summer routine for your kids so that they don’t waste their time drooling over to the computer screen the whole day. Also, creating a consistent summer routine can help build a good discipline and positive attitude towards learning.

Update on My Second Week of Meal Planning

Below are the meals I’ve planned last week. Second week of meal planning went well. Getting better at sticking to our grocery list. 

Green salad with Stir Fried Pork.

This time, I marinated the pork in Chinese wine, a little soy sauce, salt, pepper and a little vinegar and sugar. I also put sesame oil while frying the pork strips. If you want to add ginger while frying, it will taste good too as I had tried it before.

Beef Asado. 

This is marinated beef in tomato sauce and a little soy sauce. I also put carrots and potatoes. This can be for toppings in either green salads or noodles. I also packed some for my hubby’s lunch on one of the days.

Taiwanese Noodles with Beef.

I missed the beef noodle in Singapore and lately I noticed I’ve been craving Chinese food and so we bought a box of instant Taiwanese dry noodle in Costco. The noodle is quite good with sesame taste. Noodles are cooked in just two minutes. Then I just add the beef asado as toppings since I cooked almost 2 kilos of beef. 

Grilled Red Tilapia.

This is also from Costco. Four big Tilapia. I have put the two pieces for the recipe, fish Sarshado. The other one we ate for dinner and the last piece of fish, I also put in the freezer I usually prepare the grilled tilapia during dinner. I really like the grilled tilapia because it’s so easy to prepare (salt, pepper and lemongrass) and in just 20 minutes it’s cooked. We just grill it in the oven. If you want to try it, make sure to turn the tilapia after 10minutes so that both sides are evenly cooked.

Pork Humba (Bisaya version).

My hubby cooked it J and it lasted for a couple of days. This has salted black beans and banana blossom. It was our first time to try Pork Humba (Bisaya version) and we didn’t quite like it though and so unlikely we will cook it again.

Elbow Macaroni with Shrimps.

Shrimps are my savior specially when I don’t have time to cook at night and I’m so hungry already. This is so easy to prepare and cook. The elbow macaroni can be cooked in just 5 minutes. Stir fry garlic and onion in olive oil and a little butter and fry with the shrimps. Just put the cooked macaroni in the mix and stir. Add a little tomato sauce, salt and pepper and stir for another few minutes and voila, done!

Fruits (Banana, Strawberries, Apple, Blueberries).

I like to add strawberries and blueberries in green salad. Sometimes, I just add apple and a little honey. However, after a couple of days, the fruits are finished. Either we had to wait for grocery time again or we will buy fruits again on the weekend. Usually, we just wait for “grocery day”.

You may have noticed that my weekly meal plan is far from perfect. My goal is to have enough delicious and healthy food specially for lunch as I don’t really have time to cook. Also, both my daughter and hubby pack lunch and so it really needs to be prepared in advance.

My Thoughts on Weekly Meal Planning

Here’s an update of last week’s weekly meal plan. I said to myself that I will prepare a meal plan for the week so that I will not have to rush preparing them after done with work. The meal plan I am talking about is mainly for our lunch and dinner. I still prefer to prepare breakfast on a daily basis.

So here’s what really happened last week. 

Saturday morning we went for grocery shopping because we didn’t have anything left in the fridge to cook. I prepared 3 meals in the afternoon. I was thinking what meals is great for lunch that’s not so tough to prepare or cook but also considered healthy. After careful thought on the ingredients in front of me, I decided to go for the following meals:

Spaghetti in red sauce. This was good for 2.5 meals of 3 persons (myself, hubby and a growing kid).

Pork menudo. This was also good for 2 meals of 3 persons.

Garden salad with Pork Tapa as toppings. We ate this for the first 3 nights and hubby and my girl loved it! I prepared pre-marinated pork strip Tapa (Taal version)The best tapa in the world (in my opinion haha). If you want to know more about the recipe. After doing all the grocery, prepping and cooking I finished the whole thing exactly at 6pm. Super tired but ended feeling very fulfilled and happy.

My thoughts on the whole weekly meal plan is that it can absolutely help ease the load during weekdays. You’ll have more time to relax after work like doing exercise, spending time with your kids or spouse. Last week, I had time with my hubby and daughter to play basketball and we played for 2 times last week! So really, planning ahead helps a lot. I am so looking forward to improve on this over time. 🙂
